The state certification process is voluntary, however, without a certification; you will limit your choices of jobs. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologist (AMT) offers the necessary path to take for the qualified graduate of a Medical Technician program.
Of all the things you can do to prepare yourself for this career, some of the most important are lab skills. Your day-to-day routine will require you to have very specific and discriminating expertise in the lab setting.
You will be handling, examining and determining the condition of specimens, blood and tissue. These duties oblige you to have dexterity, excellent mental judgment and determination of results.

How to proceed once you are out of school
- Fill out the application available from the certifying organizations once you have met your educational requirements.
- Select a test site to take your exam. A list of sites will be available on the ASCP or AMT site.
- Complete the test and wait for your certification to be processed. It may take several weeks to arrive; however, you will have your exam outcome the day of the test.
