Nurse Practitioner Salaries in Maryland - MD

The Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland conducted a salary survey of 443 of the state’s licensed nurse practitioners in 2009. It found that the average nurse practitioner salary in Maryland falls in the range of $81,000 to $95,000 per year. The organization also found that salaries for NPs tend to differ depending upon specialization. For example, the majority of NPs who work in acute care make approximately $91,000 to $95,000 annually.

Other specializations and their average annual salary range in Maryland are listed below:

  • Adult NP:  $81,000 to $90,000
  • Family NP:  $91,000 to $95,000
  • Pediatric NP:  $86,000 to $90,000
  • Women’s health NP:  $71,000 to $75,000
  • Gerontological NP:  $101,000 to $105,000
  • Psych/Mental Health NP:  $106,000 to $110,000

These figures fit with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimate of the average nursing salary in Maryland, which is $76,330. This figure, however, includes all registered nurses (RNs), not just NPs or advanced practice RNs (APRNs). According to the BLS, NP salaries tend to vary depending upon the part of Maryland in which you practice:

  • Baltimore-Towson:  $79,150
  • Bethesda-Frederick-Gaithersburg:  $76,950
  • Cumberland:  $53,330
  • Hagerstown:  $64,530
  • Salisbury:  $68,970
  • Upper Eastern Shore:  $64,110
  • Garrett County:  $54,180

Again, it is important to keep in mind that the BLS figures represent all RNs and do not focus on NPs, who traditionally earn a higher annual income than regular RNs.
