Nurse Practitioner Salaries in New York - NY

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor groups Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), including Nurse Practitioners, with Registered Nurses (RNs) for salary data gathering reasons. Therefore, the BLS lists the average nurse practitioner (NP) salary in New York to be the same as the RN salary, at $72,790. However, one would expect that NPs would be paid higher salaries than RNs, due to the extra years of education and specialization required of them.

Advance for NPs and PAs, a professional publication, conducts an annual salary survey of all NPs in the United States. This research found in 2009 that the average annual salary for NPs working in New York was $89,785. The breakdown in salaries in New York’s largest cities is as follows:

  • Buffalo:  $82,051
  • New York City:  $99,991
  • Rochester:  $78,177
  • Syracuse:  $80,662

The annual salary for NPs rose by 10% in two years, despite a slow economy. Advance also found that NPs with higher education earn more than their counterparts. For example, NPs who possess a doctoral degree make about $10,000 per year more than NPs with a master’s degree. It is estimated that by 2015, having a doctoral degree will become the national standard for all NPs.
