Find the right school for you
In the state of California, nurse practitioners play a vital role as members of the allied health team of professionals. They serve to bridge the gap between registered nurse and physician, as nurse practitioners handle all the duties associated with registered nurses along with some of the duties and responsibilities most often associated with physicians. According to the California Association for Nurse Practitioners, there are 10,000 NPs currently practicing in the state. Nurse practitioners in California must have advanced training and education, so those who wish to become certified must attend formal programs through state-approved schools.
There are 23 schools in California that offer nurse practitioner education at the graduate level. Most of these schools require a bachelor degree in nursing or another health-related field as a prerequisite for admission, as well as a current California-issued RN license. After completing studies to earn a master of science in nursing, many schools offer separate certificates for nurse practitioners, educating them in one of the specialty areas of practice. These areas include Acute Care (ACNP), Adult (ANP), Family (FNP), Gerontology (GNP), Neonatal (NNP), Occupational Health (PHMP), Oncology (ONP), Pediatric (PNP), Psychiatric/Mental Health (PMHNP), and Women’s Health (WHCNP).
