Nurse practitioners typically begin career education by earning an undergraduate degree in nursing to become registered nurses (RNs). Afterward, nurse practitioners must gain entry into a graduate degree program and/or a post-master’s certificate program in a specific facet of advanced nursing practice. Since, these specialized degrees and certificates are only available through graduate programs, students that are searching for nurse practitioner schools in Colorado should target private universities, state universities, and online options. Some great places to locate these programs are the cities of Denver, Greeley, Pueblo, and Colorado Springs.
The most common nurse practitioner graduate degrees available in Colorado are Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degrees with a specialty emphasis. For example, students have access to these on-site MSN programs: Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner, Master of Science in Nursing: Adult Nurse Practitioner, Master of Science in Nursing: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Master of Science in Nursing: Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Master of Science in Nursing: Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Master of Science in Nursing: Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and Master of Science in Nursing: Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. All of these master degree programs range from thirty-nine credits to fifty-two credits in length.
After completing a nurse practitioner master’s degree, many students in Colorado seek additional education in the form of a Post-Master’s Certificate or a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree such as: Post-Master’s Certificate: Family Nurse Practitioner (thirty-four credits or thirty-three credits), Post-Master’s Certificate: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (thirty-one credits), and Doctor of Nursing Practice: Family Nurse Practitioner (seventy-three credits).
