Registered nurses in Georgia that want to extend their education to become nurse practitioners will need to start by gaining acceptance into one of the state’s approved nurse practitioner schools. These schools are usually found within private and state universities throughout the state that offer graduate level programs; however, online and distance learning programs that offer similar degrees also exist. Students can choose to enter into a master’s program, post-master’s certificate program, or doctorate program in nurse practitioner specialties. It should be the goal of each nurse practitioner to ultimately earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), although currently only a master’s degree is required to practice. Right now, schools in cities such as Albany, Savannah, Atlanta, Milledgeville, Statesboro, Kennesaw, Augusta, Dahlonega, and Valdosta will likely yield the best education and training opportunities for aspiring nurse practitioners in the state.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degrees are easily the most prevalent programs found in nurse practitioner schools in Georgia. These particular programs offer MSN degree options in almost every area of specialization for this profession, including: Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner: Acute Care, Pediatric Nurse: Primary Care, Women’s Health/Adult Health Nurse Practitioner, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. In addition, students have access to Post-Master Certificate programs for those interested in Adult Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner concentrations. Finally, there are even in a few different Doctor of Nursing Practice programs which students are encouraged to choose from in Georgia.
