Find the right school for you
What Indiana may lack in elevation it makes up for in lakes – it is literally the land of 1000 lakes. Alas, there is not 1000 nurse practitioner schools in Indiana, but there is about a dozen in all. The big schools for nursing education tend to be in Indianapolis, Terra Haute and Notre Dame. The good news is that, in addition to local in state schools, students also have easy access to national online learning programs in order to gain the skills necessary to become a nurse practitioner.
The state Board of Nursing web site has a list of nurse practitioner schools in Indiana that are accredited and accepted by the state. This is probably the most important criterion when choosing a program whether local or online. The state only lists undergraduate schools, not master's level, but it still provides a start in determining accreditation. Pass rates are also given which can give a student a good idea about the quality of the school.
Advanced nursing can lead to more prosperous and stable employment due to the trend in modern medicine for more complicated outpatient care. Procedures once only done on an inpatient basis are now done as same day surgery either at hospitals or in physicians’ offices. Pressure to discharge inpatients as early as possible also expands the role of the NP in home health care and residential care facilities. In addition, more routine care that was once solely the provision of doctors is being done by advanced practiced nurses either in traditional style medical clinics or the type of walk in clinics that are opening in retail stores.
