An individual seeking an advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) certification should first hold a bachelor’s degree in science and an RN license. This isn’t always necessary, however. Individuals with a non-science degree can often complete coursework to fulfill prerequisites and then enroll in a nurse practitioner program.

Upon enrolling in accredited nurse practitioner schools in Kentucky, nurse practitioner hopefuls will begin coursework toward obtaining a masters of science. While enrolled, students will receive training and hands-on clinical experience that will not only move them closer to their goal of becoming a nurse practitioner, but also provide them with real experiences that cannot be replicated in a classroom setting. Be advised that the Kentucky Board of Nursing recommends that students thoroughly research the nursing program they wish to enroll in to ensure its credibility before starting at the school.

Early on, or even before beginning coursework, individuals should decide which designation to pursue for their advanced registered nurse practitioner certification. The designations recognized by the state of Kentucky include Nurse Midwife, Nurse Anesthesiologist, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Nurse Practitioner. Quite possibly the most flexible of these options is that of the nurse practitioner because of the variety of professional avenues individuals can pursue when holding nurse practitioner certification.

Within the first part of the 2-4 years of classroom and clinic work, individuals should further determine which specialty they wish to focus on within their nurse practitioner designation. There are opportunities for nurse practitioners in many areas of the medical field including pediatrics and/or family, adult care, geriatrics, psychology, or any number of other specialties.
