Educational standards for those interested in becoming nurse practitioners are strictly regulated in Maine, so the Maine Board of Nursing must demonstrate approval of all schools offering NP programs. An advanced graduate degree (master’s or doctorate) along with specialized clinical training is necessary in order to work as a licensed nurse practitioner in the state. One must first possess a bachelor degree and be a licensed registered nurse (RN) in Maine before becoming a nurse practitioner (NP). After NP schooling is completed, one must become certified (usually through examination) as a family, adult, geriatric, pediatric, women's health or psychiatric-mental health NP in order to become licensed to practice in the state.

Once an NP in Maine has completed at least two years of supervised work, he or she has the right to practice as an independent physician. Recently, NPs in Maine were counted as credentialed participating providers and primary care providers in managed care organizations where they are allowed to perform 50% to 70% of the services typically associated with physicians. Using their own DEA numbers, they are also permitted to prescribe Schedule II, III, IV and V medications.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring nurse practitioners in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, West Scarborough and Sanford, Maine may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Brighton Medical Center and St. Josephs Hospital.
