Nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who are licensed to offer healthcare services such as physical exams, treating illness and injury, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and counseling patients and families. Nurse practitioners may provide some of the same services as physicians. According to the Maryland Coalition of Nurse Practitioners, there are currently 3400 nurse practitioners (NPs) working in the state. The shortage of physicians across Maryland is even greater than the shortage of nurses, especially in rural areas.  Since NPs are more and more frequently handling duties once reserved only for physicians explains why NPs are now found working in all areas of the state. The fact that nursing is a thriving and secure field is just one of the reasons students should consider nurse practitioner schools in Maryland.

For those who wish to become NPs in Maryland, graduate-level education is necessary. The law dictates that NPs must graduate from a Maryland State Board of Nursing approved NP program. These programs may offer a master’s or doctorate degree. NP programs in Maryland offer traditional adult NP studies as well as education in specialized disciplines with titles such as Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Following the completion of one’s graduate studies, prospective NPs in Maryland must take an exam to become a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP). Qualifying national certification organizations include the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
