Find the right school for you
To become a nurse practitioner in Michigan, you must complete the necessary educational requirements as well as pass the national certification exams pertaining to the specialty area of your choice. Many nursing schools offer various options for different nursing degrees. A master’s degree is required to be a nurse practitioner. Although there are several paths to becoming a licensed RN, in order to become a nurse practitioner, you must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing as a requirement for admittance into a master’s degree program. In addition, many programs require a minimum grade point average, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and verification of clinical experience in nursing.
Once you have completed the requirements for a master’s degree, you will be eligible to sit for the national board examination for your specialty. After passing this exam, you must submit your academic transcripts, verification of successful completion of the national exam, a completed application, and any other required documentation to become licensed in the state of Michigan.
Because education helps you serve patients better, and because technology and treatment can change over the course of several years, it is necessary to renew your certification every two years. According to the Michigan Board of Nursing, nurse practitioners must complete 40 hours of continuing education in their specialty during every two year cycle.
