Find the right school for you
Nurse practitioner schools in Minnesota have specific guidelines regarding admission requirements. It is possible that an applicant will not be accepted after the first application because class sizes are not as large as those in a general degree field. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, hold a current license as a registered nurse, meet the minimum number of years of clinical experience (which varies by specialty and by school), and be proficient in speaking, reading, and understanding the English language. Some schools may also require that applicants take the Graduate Record Exam, a standardized test that measures various reasoning, analytical, and critical thinking and writing skills.
Although programs may vary in the required number of hours to earn an advanced degree as a nurse practitioner, they usually fall between 68 and 80 credits. Courses in the program include topics such as advanced physiology, epidemiology, moral and ethical positions in nursing, pharmacology, nursing research, and economics of health care. In addition, students will have various types of clinical experiences relating to their coursework. Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis is an example of a health care facility which offers clinical experiences for nurse practitioners. Full-time students can often complete their degree in three years, although there are four- and five-year programs for students who attend school part-time due to work or other commitments.
