Find the right school for you
Many nurse practitioner schools in Mississippi require that incoming master’s degree students have a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited program with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; be licensed to practice nursing in the U.S. and eligible for licensure in Mississippi; have clinical experience as a registered nurse; and submit three letters of reference, a completed application, official transcripts from all colleges attended, and a background check. In addition, an interview may take place with the admissions committee.
Once admitted to the program, students will gain advanced knowledge and skills through both a didactic program consisting of 42-46 credit hours as well as a clinical component in which they receive more than 600 hours of practical experience under the supervision of a physician or advanced practice nurse. Courses include such topics as biophysical science, pharmacotherapuetics, acute care concepts, and advanced assessment and diagnostic skills.
After earning a master’s degree from a recognized program, nurse practitioners must pass a certification examination given by a recognized certifying body and fulfill several other requirements in order to be licensed by the state of Mississippi as a certified nurse practitioner. In addition, nurse practitioners who wish to prescribe controlled substances must receive Mississippi Board of Nursing Controlled Substance Prescriptive Authority, a Uniform Controlled Substances Registration Certificate, and be registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
