The New Mexico State Board of Nursing regulates nurse practitioner schools in New Mexico. All nurse practitioners in the state, prior to becoming licensed, must complete education at the graduate level before they can become licensed NPs. In order to be admitted to graduate nursing programs, one must have a current Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Mexico and usually a bachelor degree, preferably in nursing. Nurses who are licensed in a compact state must submit verification of Compact Licensure.
New Mexico mandates that all nurse practitioners graduate from a program that is at least a year long, with 1/3 of the program’s hours taking place in the classroom and 2/3 of its hours taking place in a clinical setting, under the direction of a certified nurse practitioner or physician. Most of these programs are at the master’s level, while some may offer a post-graduate certificate or diploma if one already has a master’s degree. Some nurse practitioner programs are even available at the doctoral level. All those interested in becoming nurse practitioners in New Mexico must also be nationally certified by a recognized organization. Nurse practitioners must also apply for prescribing authority, if they want to be able to prescribe medications to their patients.
