In the state of New York, nurse practitioners must possess a certificate issued by the New York State Education Department in order to become licensed to practice. Before getting this certification, however, one must be a registered nurse already licensed in the state and must attend one of the nurse practitioner schools that have been accepted by the New York State Board of Nursing. Ultimately, one must graduate with a master’s degree or doctorate.

After graduation, a prospective nurse practitioner in New York must take a national certification examination with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Holistic Nurses Certification Corporation, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses, the National Certification Corporation, the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Your specialized area of practice will determine which certification examination you must take. In addition, all applicants for an NP license in New York must complete a course in pharmacotherapeutics and drug management. Once licensed, NPs in New York must establish a collaborative agreement with their hiring physicians.  This agreement will cover such employee/employer logistics as the nurse’s coverage for absences, the resolution process for disagreements in diagnosis and treatment, and the agreement to review a representative sample of patient records every three months.  An NP in New York must also establish a practice protocol text specifying their specialty area of practice.   Under New York state law, NPs may prescribe medications.
