In South Dakota, nurse practitioners are advance practice nurses who, under collaborative agreement with doctors, perform medical functions. They must first be licensed as registered nurses or RNs; by completing a board approved program, they can extend their scope of practice. Duties can include diagnosing, writing prescriptions, signing birth and death certificates and performing medical examinations required for athletic participation. South Dakota’s nurse practitioners are not completely autonomous; they are, for instance, generally expected to have direct face to face interaction with a cooperating physician at least a twice a month. For practical purposes, however, they act in the capacity of primary care physician. One of the goals, in fact, is to provide health care in underserved areas.
Nurse practitioner schools in South Dakota give would-be nurse practitioners the skills they need for competent, legal practice. South Dakota expects all its advance practice nurses to be proficient in assessing conditions, planning interventions, handling case management and health education functions; for theses duties, they should utilize research as needed. They may be licensed in particular areas where they have received appropriate education. Some focus on life stages. These include neonatal, pediatric, family, adult, and geriatric care.
