The first step in pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner in Utah is to complete a bachelor’s degree in science and hold an RN certification. Some nurse practitioner schools in Utah also offer programs for individuals with a non-science bachelor’s. These programs allow students to fulfill science and nursing prerequisites while smoothly transitioning into an advanced nursing education. Before enrolling in nurse practitioner schools in Utah, it is beneficial to determine the nursing programs approved by the state. A list of accepted programs and nurse practitioner schools in Utah can be found on the state’s Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing site.
Becoming a nurse practitioner in Utah involves enrolling in a two-to-four year Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) program that combines unparalleled clinical experience with essential classroom knowledge. Toward the beginning of the program, students select a specialty. Common specialties include pediatrics, oncology, endocrinology, neurology, geriatrics, and women’s health. The opportunities for specialties are vast, and the career paths within each specialty are often varied as well.
After completing an MSN, graduates of nurse practitioner schools in Utah apply for certification through the state to become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). Further testing and certification is required for a nurse practitioner in Utah who intends to work with controlled substances (i.e. prescribing narcotics).
