To become a nurse practitioner in Virginia, individuals must complete a two-to-four year Masters of Science in Nursing program. There are several accredited nurse practitioner schools in Virginia to choose from and a variety of program tracks to follow. It is possible to obtain an MSN through an online program, an accelerated track, or through a traditional college education. In addition, some nurse practitioner schools in Virginia offer specialized programs for individuals who hold a non-science bachelor’s and wish to pursue a career as an NP.

At the start of the program, students designate the specialty they intend to focus on and receive certification for. Common specialties include pediatrics, family care, nurse-midwifery, and mental health. The list of specialties is vast, and the career paths within each specialty provide a nurse practitioner in Virginia with an abundance of options.

During the program, students undergo advanced studies on pharmacology and other necessary aspects of becoming an NP. Another essential aspect of becoming a nurse practitioner in Virginia lies in the clinical practicum. Students further their expertise through hands-on clinical experiences. The clinical practicum allows students to put their knowledge into action and gain confidence in themselves and their profession.

After graduation, hopeful nurse practitioners in Virginia undergo an exam to acquire their NP certification. Individuals must hold an RN license prior to applying for an NP certification.  Upon successful completion of schooling and necessary state applications and exams, individuals earn nurse practitioner certification and are allowed to practice in Virginia.
