There are approximately 35 nursing schools in Wisconsin; however, not all of them offer master's level programs aspiring nurse practitioners seek.

Innovative measures have been taken in recent years to open up the educational bottleneck within the state. Some of these include accelerated BSN and MSN programs that shorten the length of study time, use of clinical assistants as well as the use of shared facilities and curriculums. Another key measure has been the deployment of online study and/or blended programs that utilize an online component with campus based classes.

Programs offered by nurse practitioner schools in Wisconsin can also be supplemented by online and distance learning programs. This is an ideal situation for the Wisconsin student who does not happen to live near a nursing school with the specialty program or class schedule that he or she is looking for.

To meet licensing requirements in Wisconsin it is key that the program attended be accredited by one of two agencies. The Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing recognizes nursing schools that provide evidence of accreditation from either the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Wisconsin law also provides that any solicitation for an educational program within the state must contain in large type a notice if it is not accredited in the state for the training of nurses.
