Nurse practitioner (NP) is the most popular specialization for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and deals with direct care and management of broad population groups. According to the Wyoming State Board of Nursing (WSBN), APRNs are registered nurses (RNs) who may prescribe, administer, dispense or provide non-prescriptive and prescriptive medications as allowed by state regulations.  Typically, NPs have a master’s degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program, have passed a national certification examination and are recognized by WSBN as an APRN with NP specialty.

In Wyoming, registered nurses who have completed an accredited APRN educational program prior to January 1, 1999 can bypass the master’s degree requirement.  The national certification is offered by two organizations – the American Academy of Nursing Practitioners (AANP) and the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC). NPs can specialize in, and offer services in primary, acute or chronic care in a variety of settings.  ANCC conducts the specialty examination that you must pass to specialize in an area.

According to www.statehealthfacts.org, Wyoming ranks 30th out of 50 states in terms of Health Index. Understandably, there is considerable need for specialized health care professionals that can provide individualized care to different population segments. In Wyoming, authorized NPs can set up their independent practice. There are nurse practitioner schools in Wyoming, as well as online, which prepare aspirants for this respectable career by offering accredited master’s programs.
