The Kentucky Board of Nursing regulates the profession of nursing within the state of Kentucky. There are a few general types of nurses: licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and advanced practice nurses (APNs). No matter which type of nurse you plan to become, you will need to attend programs offering formal education and training. The Kentucky Board or Nursing has approved 30 colleges in Kentucky to provide education for LPNs and 46 colleges that provide RN education.
In Kentucky, an LPN must graduate from a college program with a certificate or diploma. Usually this type of program consists of about 45 credits and takes about one year to complete. There are two types of degree programs for RNs in Kentucky. One is an associate degree program, consisting of approximately 70 credits and lasting for about two years. The other is a bachelor degree program, about two years longer in duration and consisting of about 140 credits. Beyond undergraduate degrees for RNs, there are advanced practice degrees as well. Some RNs with a bachelor degree go on to complete a master’s or even a doctorate degree program. These degrees are recommended for RNs who want to become clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners or nurse anesthetists in the state of Kentucky.
