Nursing schools in Louisiana are plentiful. As of 2009, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing had approved 26 pre-RN licensure nursing programs at colleges in the state, with some of these offering diplomas or certificates and others an associate or bachelor degree option. In addition, the board has also approved seven graduate nursing programs offering education for the advanced practice nurse. This includes schooling for nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nursing education, nursing administration, and certified registered nurse anesthetists.

Although the number of RN graduates from nursing schools in Louisiana has increased by 30% in the last five years (figures obtained from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing), a nursing shortage still exists in the state. In 2009, there were 54,366 licensed Registered Nurses (RNs) in Louisiana, 48% of whom had earned a bachelor’s degree. Four hospitals in Louisiana actively work to recruit and retain nurses. These include East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, and Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge.
