Find the right school for you
A career in nursing offers caring individuals the chance to better the lives of others, while at the same time providing job stability and opportunities for specialization within the field. Nursing schools in Maine are prepared to answer the demand for more nurses in the state, as they graduate both LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) and RNs (Registered Nurses) each year. Beyond that, however, opportunities for nurses with the proper degree are almost limitless. Colleges in Maine provide nursing education programs that end with a certificate or degree, depending upon one’s eventual career goal.
When choosing a nursing school in Maine, the main thing that a student should look for is accreditation. Schools must be accredited or approved by the Maine Board of Nursing in order for a graduate of the school to achieve licensure as a nurse in Maine. After completing nursing school, graduates must also be prepared to take the NCLEX-PN if they plan to become an LPN or the NCLEX-RN if they plan to become an RN in Maine. These examinations are administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and test a graduate’s knowledge and skills learned in nursing school. One cannot become a licensed nurse in Maine without passing the proper examination.
