Find the right school for you
Nurses have one of the most challenging and most rewarding positions among the team of health care professionals serving the public. Although the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Maryland is one of the highest-paying states in which nurses can work, there is currently a shortage of nurses in the state. In 2006, the state awarded grants to several nursing schools in the state to attract more students in its Nurse Support Program. Nursing schools in Maryland are known to offer some of the best programs in the entire country.
Colleges in Maryland offer many types of degree options to those interested in nursing education. Online programs exist, as do traditional university and college educational settings for nursing programs. Students who are interested in pursuing nursing in Maryland may choose to study to become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), a program of study which takes about a year to complete. If students choose to get an associate degree in nursing, that will take about two years to complete and can lead to becoming an Associate Registered Nurse (RN). Many who opt for this route eventually choose to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Each of these programs also requires that the student pass specific exams before becoming licensed as a nurse in Maryland. Depending upon your ultimate goal, you will either take the NCLEX-PN or the NCLEX-RN national certification examination for nurses following graduation from nursing school. More information can be obtained from the Maryland Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland, 21215-2254.
