In Massachusetts, it is illegal to practice nursing without a state license. In order to obtain such a license, nurses must have the proper training and education and pass a national examination. Students who attend nursing schools in Massachusetts will be well-prepared for the requirements of the commonwealth. Vocational and traditional colleges and universities provide nursing education, as do some online nursing schools.

Your ultimate career goals will determine what type of degree you decide to pursue in nursing school. Associate degree programs commonly prepare students to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), while bachelor’s degree programs can train students to become Registered Nurses (RNs). Before entering nursing school in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Nurses Association recommends that you take the following courses while still in high school: two years of a foreign language, four years of English, two years of social studies, two to three years of math (including geometry and algebra), and two to four years of science (including biology, physics, computer science and chemistry). Most Massachusetts nursing schools have prerequisites that include most, if not all, of these courses. In addition, before entering nursing school, consider your own personal characteristics to see if you have what it takes to become a nurse. Are you a caring person? Are you a team player? Can you handle responsibility? Can you negotiate and do you have good judgment skills? Can you follow directions? Can you solve problems independently and with a team? If you can answer yes to these questions, nursing school may be the right fit for you.
