According to the Michigan Center for Nursing, there were 152,926 licensed nurses working in the state in 2008. This includes 27,542 LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) and 125,402 RNs (Registered Nurses). When one considers that the population of Michigan is 9,809,700 (per statehealthfacts.org), it becomes clear that there is a shortage of nurses in the state. Nursing schools in Michigan train students to fill that void.

Colleges in Michigan may grant certificates for practical nursing and an associate or bachelor degree for registered nursing. The Michigan Board of Education approves nursing programs in the state, and has currently approved 25 practical nurse (PN) programs, 32 associate degree programs (ADN), 19 bachelor degree programs (BSN), 13 master of science degree programs (MSN), 3 doctoral programs (PhD), and two doctor of nursing practice programs (DNP) . Other programs outside of the state and not on the list can also be accepted with prior approval by the board. The Michigan Center for Nursing reports that, currently, the majority of licensed nurses working in Michigan hold an associate degree, followed by a bachelor degree and an RN diploma. In Michigan, the shortage of nurses exists primarily for RNs, as it has been projected that nursing schools in Michigan must graduate at least 192 RNs each year for the next five years to fill the expected void.
