Nursing schools in New Hampshire offer a variety of ways for interested students to begin a career in nursing. Such programs include licensure upon completing an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, as well as opportunities for those who already have a bachelor’s degree to obtain the necessary education to become a nurse. Nursing education spans a broad range of topics and skills. Courses in biology, chemistry, medical terminology, sociology, psychology, and other general humanities courses provide a solid foundation for further study in nursing. Courses specific to nursing include patient care, critical decision-making, and using medical guidelines to provide quality clinical care.

In addition to classroom studies (or online courses, many of which may be available), nursing students in New Hampshire take part in clinical experiences offered through local hospitals and health agencies. These clinical rotations allow students to apply what they’ve learned in their classes, develop a professional skill set, and work with licensed practitioners.

Like most health care-related fields, nursing requires licensure in the state of New Hampshire.  The application for licensure includes a fingerprint and background check, completion of the application itself, and submission of an official transcript from the accredited school where the nursing degree was earned. Once all these items have been submitted, students will be assigned a time to take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination–Registered Nurse) exam. A nursing license must be renewed every two years and requires a certain number of continuing education hours.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring nurses in Manchester, Nashua, East Concord, Concord and Derry Village, New Hampshire may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Concord Hospital, Wentworth Douglas Hospital, Catholic Medical Center and Cheshire Medical Center.
