Nursing schools in New Mexico provide the educational background for those who want to pursue a career in the largest segment of the health care employment sector. Registered nurses are vital components of hospitals, physicians’ offices, clinics, outpatient facilities, schools, and other governmental agencies. Nurses have the opportunity to work in various settings as a generalist or they can specialize in a specific area of care. Nursing degrees vary in their educational length, but all registered nurses must pass a national board examination in order to be certified and licensed. There are typically three main pathways to becoming a registered nurse: earn a diploma through a vocational program; earn an associate’s degree through a junior college or two-year degree program; or earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing, a four-year degree which included other liberal arts topics.

A bachelor’s degree provides a broad background which gives nurses an educational advantage, especially if they want to go on to specialize as a nurse-midwife or nurse anesthetist. Many specialties require master’s degrees and a bachelor’s degree in nursing is typically a prerequisite to admittance into these types of programs.
