North Dakota ranks high among two markers for poor health: binge drinking and being overweight or obese. According to StateHealthFacts.org, North Dakota has the second-highest population of binge drinkers and the seventh highest population of overweight or obese people of any state in the union. To help treat these problems and prevent them in the future, nurses are in high demand in the state. Because of this level of demand, many students are now turning to nursing schools in North Dakota when choosing a health care career.
The North Dakota Board of Nursing approves programs for both Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) in the state. Currently, there are nine colleges that have been approved to provide LPN education programs, and 14 programs that provide RN training in North Dakota. Out of state programs may be approved by the board on a case-by-case basis, especially if they are approved by the board in the state in which the program is located. LPNs usually go to school for about a year and earn a certificate or diploma. RNs may earn a certificate, associate degree or bachelor degree, depending upon the program chosen. Beyond undergraduate nursing school, RNs may also seek graduate education, especially if they wish to become Advanced Practice RNs (APRNs) and hold leadership, educational or practitioner roles. Three colleges in North Dakota currently offer graduate degrees for RNs.
