Admission to nursing schools in Ohio requires advanced planning and academic diligence. Obtaining a high school diploma or GED is the first step to beginning a career in nursing. Science courses such as biology and chemistry are especially important, as they serve as foundations to college-level science classes. Enrollment in an accredited nursing program is another important step in the process. Depending on your career goals, you can become a nurse by earning a diploma from a vocational program, an associate’s degree from a community or junior college, or a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from a four-year institution. The more education you receive, the more options you’ll have in your career.

Once you have received your degree or diploma, you must pass the national examination given to nursing students. This exam, the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination – Registered Nurse), tests the knowledge, skills, and abilities of each candidate regarding the safe and effective practices used in the care of patients. The exam uses a combination of multiple choice questions and short answer, fill-in-the-blank questions. After passing the NCLEX-RN, you can apply for licensure in the state of Ohio. This involves submitting an official transcript from the educational institution from which you obtained your degree, filling out an application form, and submitting a photo, consent for a background check, and application fee.
