There are essentially two different steps needed to become a nurse in South Carolina. The first step is to successfully graduate from a nursing program that meets the approval of the South Carolina State Board of Nursing. The next step is to pass the national examination for nursing, called the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Many nurses begin their education by enrolling in an associate degree program (two years) or a baccalaureate degree program (four years) in nursing. However, there are diploma, certificate, master degree, and doctorate programs in nursing that are also available to students.

Nursing schools in South Carolina primarily exist in junior colleges, technical colleges, medical universities, community colleges, state universities, private colleges, online schools, and private universities. Many nursing schools are found in cities like Charleston, Conway, Cheraw, Orangeburg, Greenwood, Florence, Greenville, Rock Hill, Pendleton, Sumter, Graniteville, Columbia, and West Columbia. Some degree pathways found in these nursing schools include: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, Associate of Applied Science in Nursing, Associate of Nursing, Associate of Practical Nursing, Diploma in Practical Nursing, and Post-Master’s Certificate of Graduate Study in Advanced Practical Nursing, to name a few. In addition, many nursing schools in South Carolina also offer degree programs with the option to concentrate of an area of specialization such as women’s health, primary care, psychiatric/mental health, pediatrics, or acute care.
