According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Tennessee has the third-highest concentration of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) of any state in the union. With 24,950 LPNs, one would think that Tennessee has plenty of nurses for everyone. However, a shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) still exists in Tennessee and elsewhere in the United States, which is why many students are being encouraged to enroll in nursing schools in Tennessee. Per data provided by the Deans and Directors of Schools of Nursing in Tennessee, the state will need 35,300 additional nurses of all types by the year 2020.

For students who are still in high school and thinking of pursuing nursing education, the Deans and Directors of Schools of Nursing in Tennessee recommend taking four years of English, two to four years of math, two to four years of science (including biology and chemistry), computer science, three to four years of social science (including psychology), two years of a foreign language, and one to two years of health studies. Colleges in Tennessee offer both certificate and degree programs for nurses, depending upon which type of nurse you plan to become. LPN training usually takes one year to complete. In Tennessee, you can become an RN by pursuing a two year associate degree, a three year diploma program, or a four year bachelor degree program.
