The Virginia Board of Nursing regulates both Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) practicing in the state. They approve nursing schools in Virginia for accreditation. According to the Board, in order to become licensed as an LPN, one must have completed at least two years of high school, received a diploma from a Board-approved practical nursing program, and passed the NCLEX examination for Practical Nursing. In order to use the title RN in Virginia, one must have completed four years of high school, a diploma or degree from a Board-approved registered nursing education program, and passed the NCLEX examination for Registered Nursing.

Colleges and universities must be approved by the Board in order for a graduate to qualify for nurse licensing in Virginia. Practical nursing programs currently approved in Virginia range from high school extended programs to private university or hospital certificate programs. Most Practical Nursing programs take about a year to complete. Registered nursing programs that are Board-approved include both associate degree and bachelor degree programs.  These programs may take from two to four years to complete. For more information on Board approved programs, contact the Board at The Virginia Board Of Nursing, 9960 Maryland Drive, Suite 300, Henrico, Virginia  23233; or telephone them at (804) 367-4515.
