Recently scholarships for nursing schools in West Virginia were ranked among the top five scholarships for which residents in the state may apply. A nursing shortage is currently being felt in all sectors of West Virginia healthcare, which is one reason why West Virginia nursing schools are working to attract more students to the nursing profession. Nurses in West Virginia have many choices when it comes to career paths. Students may choose to study to become a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse at the undergraduate level, and once the RN license is attained, graduate-level education options exist as well.
The West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses accredits colleges in the state offering LPN training. Currently (2010) there are 23 such programs accredited. The West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses accredits colleges to train RNs. In 2010 there are 11 associate degree programs and 10 bachelor degree programs for RNs accredited in the state. Additionally, the board has accredited 5 colleges that provide masters level programs for RNs and one college providing a doctoral level program for RNs. Graduate school training is appropriate for RNs who wish to become clinical specialists, practitioners or educators.
