Nutritionist School in Alabama

Alabama Nutrition School

A Bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SASC) is the primary foundation for anyone who plans to become a nutritionist in Alabama. A typical Bachelor's degree program takes four to five years to complete, depending on how many courses a student takes each semester.

Most Bachelor's degree programs combine general classes with nutrition and dietetics-specific classes, giving students a full, interdisciplinary education. Students can expect to spend at least one and a half to two years in their general education classes, which set the foundation for their major classes. Major classes include a special focus on human anatomy and physiology, community nutrition, personal nutrition, nutrition and metabolism, food preparation, and other topics.

Aspiring nutritionists and dietitians should look for certification programs that combine discipline-specific classes with interdisciplinary courses, extracurricular opportunities, and hands-on activities. Students looking for on-site programs should strongly consider campuses that offer students with opportunities to get involved in their field, such as clubs and organizations devoted to raising health, disease, and nutritional awareness. Such opportunities can give students a better understanding of their future career field, provide them with a strong foundation for their pre-professional hours, and build their resumes.

Students should also look for certification programs that require them to gain 900-1000 pre-professional practice hours in a field of their interest. Although this experience can be completed after a student graduates from a Bachelor's degree program, it is helpful to obtain guidance and connections from a college or university.

Students can also obtain a Master's or Doctoral degree in Nutrition from one of Alabama's universities. Though it may not be completely necessary, a Master's or Doctoral degree can help a Nutritionist become more versed in a specific area of nutrition, such as Diabetes or Obesity treatment.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Nutritionists in Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile and Huntsville, Alabama may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Huntsville Hospital, Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, Saint Vincent's Birmingham, and Dekalb Regional Medical Center.
