As a condition of state licensure, you need to be currently certified by either the Clinical Nutrition Certification Board (CNCB) or the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists (CBNS). Both of these Boards offer different types of certification.
The certified clinical nutritionist (CCN) certification is given by the CNCB. In order to test for this, you will need the minimum of an associate’s degree in nutrition or dietetic studies. This certification is considered entry-level, and the fee for this test is $450.
The certified nutrition specialist (CNS) title is reserved for students that have a bachelor’s degree or higher in nutritional studies. This is a specialist title, and many students do eventually work up to this level of recognition. The cost for this exam is $300.
Requirements for Recertification
While there is no specific requirement for continuing your education set forth by the state, both the CNCB and the CBNS have such requirements for recertification of titles. The need for continuing education is absolutely essential to this profession, as technology and science are constantly changing. Theoretically, the requirement from the state is that you must be certified in order to renew your license, which means that you do have to continue your education.
All CCNs must have at least 40 credit hours for every two years, and your renewal period for this title is every two years. CNSs, on the other hand, must have at least 75 credit hours every five years.Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Nutritionists in New York, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers and Syracuse, New York may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Presbyterian Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital.
