After you have finished your degree, you then be eligible to become certified in your profession. Depending on the current degree that you have, you will either be able to attain the certified clinical nutritionist (CCN) title or the certified nutrition specialist (CNS) title.

As a CCN, you will be considered an entry-level nutritionist, and you must have at least an associate’s degree to be eligible for this certification. You will be instructed to take the examination at an approved location of Clinical Nutrition Certification Board (CNCB), and, upon passage, you will be issued your certification. The charge for this exam is $450.

The CNS title is considered a specialty of nutrition. What that means is that you will be one step above a CCN, and you must have at least a bachelor’s degree to qualify. If you meet that prerequisite, you can then take the test this test, which is administered by the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists (CBNS). The cost for this exam is $350.

Recertification

As either a CCN or a CNS, you must continue your education to recertify. You will not be required to take a test to do this, but you will be required to prove that you have met the continuing education requirements. This is important because health and medicine are constantly with the onset of scientific changes, and continuing your education can help to keep you informed about their impact on your profession.

CCNs should have at least 40 college hours of education related to nutrition every two years. CNSs, as specialists, are required to take 75 college hours of continuing education for every five years. Once you have completed this education, you will be allowed to recertify with the respective Board.
