One of the most versatile positions within the allied health therapy field is that of occupational therapy assistant. Occupational therapy assistants work under the direction of an occupational therapist in assisting patients to regain or improve their skills of everyday living. In the state of Arizona, occupational therapy assistants must be trained and licensed. There are a variety of occupational therapy assistant schools in Arizona, both online and in a traditional brick and mortar format, to help students achieve this goal.
Colleges that train occupational therapy assistants typically offer programs that lead to an associate degree. Coursework that one will likely find in an occupational therapy assistant program includes medical terminology, kinesiology, anatomy, physiology, principles of mental health, growth and development, and therapeutic modalities. In addition, most of Arizona’s occupational therapy assistant colleges require students to complete at least one, usually two, semesters of clinical fieldwork, in which they get the chance to use the skills learned in the classroom in a real-life setting. Examples of medical facilities in Arizona that might play host to a clinical practicum include Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix and the surrounding areas and Saint Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix.
