A minimum of a bachelor degree is required in Ohio to become a long term care or nursing home administrator. Long term care education in Ohio is necessary in order to hold any administrative position. However, one’s degree does not have to be in nursing home or health care administration. If you hold a bachelor degree within any discipline, then you may become an Administrator in Training, and must complete an internship of 9 months/1500 hours working 35 hours per week. If one holds a master degree within any field, completion of a 6 month/1000 hour internship working 35 hours a week is mandatory. Core knowledge skills courses must also be completed for those who do not have a bachelor or master degree in nursing home administration.
For those who do have a degree in nursing home administration from a college program recognized by the Ohio Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators or by the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards, you may apply to take state and national examinations in long term care administration without any further internship or classes required. For more information on colleges in Ohio that are approved for these purposes, you may contact the Ohio Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators by writing to 246 North High Street (1st Floor), Columbus, Ohio 43215, or by calling (614) 466-5114.
