Licensed Practical Nurse in Ohio

Licensed practical nurses (LPN) in Ohio are in high demand.  There are currently over 40,000 LPNs licensed in the state, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  This number will increase significantly in the next 8-10 years as the profession as a whole is expected to grow by over 20%.  The highest demand for LPNs will be in long-term facilities and home health facilities that assist and aid the elderly population.  In addition, rural areas of Ohio have the greatest need for LPNs and such areas offer alluring incentives and bonuses to licensed practical nurses willing to relocate or begin a career there.

Steps to Become a Licensed Practical Nurse in Ohio

  1. Be a high school graduate or have a GED.
  2. Attend an approved practical nursing program.
  3. Graduate from approved online or campus based Ohio LPN program, and request a Certification of Program Completion Form that must be completed by the nursing school attended and sent, unopened, directly to the Ohio Board of Nursing.
  4. Complete an application for licensure that can be obtained online from the Ohio Board of Nursing.  Be sure all documentation and fees are required when submitting application.  This includes a $75 fee, a passport-size photograph, and a notarized Licensed Practical Nurse Affidavit Form.
  5. Register for the NCLEX-PN examination.  The exam is administered by Pearson VUE and is $200.
  6. Take and pass the NCLEX.  If the exam is not passed the first time, it can be attempted again in 91 days.
  7. Wait for license approval from the Ohio Board of Nursing after passing the NCLEX-PN.
  8. Search for an entry-level job as a LPN.
