Educational Foundation for Ohio Licensed Practical Nurses
The educational path for becoming a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in Ohio is similar to other states. LPNs will be required to pass a licensing examination, known as the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses). Prior to taking this exam, a state-approved practical nursing program must be fully completed.
Potential licensed practical nurse students can begin preparing as early as high school by taking basic courses in math and science. In addition, some high schools offer nursing programs that are actually part of high school curriculum. These are most often found in cooperation with a vocational program or vocational school.
A high school diploma is required for entry into almost all Ohio LPN schools Such programs are offered through technical and vocational schools or community and junior colleges. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) is the national accrediting body for licensed practical nurse educational programs.
Full-time students usually complete training programs through Ohio LPN schools within one year. Classroom instruction and supervised clinical practice (patient care) will be the primary focus of the LPN educational program. Content covered will include basic nursing concepts and patient care. Other courses will include anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology, psychology, medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics nursing, pharmacology, nutrition, first aid, child growth and development, and physical education.
An associate’s degree or LPN certificate will be issued upon completion of the LPN educational program.
Continuing Education and Advancement for Licensed Practical Nurses in Ohio
Ohio licensed practical nurses must renew their license every two years. Renewal applications can be submitted to the Ohio Board of Nursing either by mail or online. Twenty four hours of continuing education contact hours must be completed and documentation submitted with the renewal application. At least one contact hours must be related to Chapters 4723, 1-23 of the Ohio nurse practical code rules.
LPNs may also choose to advance in their profession by completing a LPN to RN educational program. These allow LPNs to still practice and gain experience while at the same time furthering their education and career options through becoming a RN. Upon completion of such a program, LPNs will need to pass the NCLEX-RN examination. Such programs are often flexible in order to accommodate the schedule of working LPNs.
