Medical Transcriptionist Salary in Ohio - OH

Ohio Medical Transcription Salaries

As one of America’s most populous states, Ohio has a huge demand for medical transcription professionals. And, U.S. labor statistics indicate that demand will grow an estimated 14 percent in the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Physicians’ offices and large group practices as well as hospitals in Ohio need thousands of transcribers to record all the health records they dictate by hand or verbally. Ohio medical transcription compensation is also relatively high, with most transcriptionists able to find steady work. An entry-level average Ohio medical transcriptionist salary is usually between $10 and $16 per hour. Salaries correlate with a variety of factors including location, responsibility level and skills. The majority of medical transcriptionists are located near the state’s largest cities: Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

Medical transcriptionists in Ohio should possess three important qualities: precision, quickness, and commitment. The long-term efficiency of a quality medical transcriptionist, however, is measured more by demeanor with employers, the turnaround times for reports and the desire to constantly learn. While education and certification is certainly beneficial, medical transcriptionists will soon realize the importance of constantly improving their instruction by to workshops or finding the time to network with other transcriptionists who are as enthusiastic about their profession as they are.

Ohio medical transcriptionists must obtain certification from the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). Students completing certification requirements, which include a passing score on an examination, can be credentialed as a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) or a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT). Those seeking the CMT credential must have at least two years experience in addition to a passing score on the examination. Continuing education credits must be submitted every three years to keep credentials current.
