Medical Transcription Schools in Ohio
There are a variety of Ohio medical transcription schools, including seven vocational and technical schools that result in diplomas or associate degrees. Five of these programs are available online. Seventeen community colleges and universities in Ohio award associate and bachelors degreees in medical transcription. Most programs require that students know how to use Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint and be familiar with emailing, printing, uploading and downloading files. Coursework includes extensive training in medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, basic medical techniques and laboratory procedures as well as grammar, keyboarding, transcribing, coding, and insurance.
In many Ohio programs, the second phase of study includes intensive training on the use of medical transcription technology and practical exercises geared toward increasing the speed and proficiency in the use of this technology. Most programs are capped by a 250-hour externship in a professional setting. Graduates of an Ohio training program meeting the requirements of the AHDI may take the Certified Medical Transcriptionist exam.
