If you want to work in nurse informatics in Ohio, certification is a must.  There are two options available for nurse informatics, Nurse Informatics certification (RN-BC) and Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS).  The CPHIMS is for those who want to work specifically with the technology used in health care (creating databases, repairing programs, etc) and management of these departments, while the nurse informatics certification is for those who want to work on the clinical side of health informatics. There is not a specific Ohio nursing informatics certification, rather it is done through the previously mentioned groups.

To earn the nurse informatics credential, you must have a bachelor’s degree (preferably in nursing), registered nurse (RN) licensure, and two years experience working as a RN.  The next set of requirements involves education and experience in informatics.  If you haven’t graduated or attended at least 12 semester hours from a graduate level nurse informatics program you must have 2000 hours practicing in nurse informatics.  You must also have obtained at least 30 hours of continuing education in health informatics.  When you meet these requirements you can apply for the certification exam and will earn the credential when the exam is passed.

The CPHIMS also requires you to pass a certification exam. To be eligible for this exam you must have a bachelor’s degree with 5 years experience in informatics and management systems or have a graduate degree with 3 years experience.
