Becoming a Personal Trainer in the State of Ohio

  1. There is an age requirement to become a personal trainer in Ohio.  The minimum age required (for both state and national examinations) is eighteen.  You will not even be allowed to take a certification exam if you are not at least eighteen years of age.
  2. While not a requirement, it is generally considered a good idea to review basic anatomy.  A thorough knowledge of the workings of the human body is key to being a successful personal trainer, and should be obtained.  Make sure to focus specifically on the skeletal system, the muscular system, the muscles, and the cardiovascular and respiratory system.  These systems will all be important to your work as a personal trainer.

  3. Make sure to become CPR certified.  While this is also not a requirement, it is considered a good idea to become certified as many employers would prefer their employees to be so.
  4. Become familiar with the newest exercise equipment.  You will be required to show your clients how to use such machines, and need to be ready to do so.  Advances in exercise equipment are always being made, and being knowledgeable on all the latest advances is also important.

In Ohio, personal trainer certification and associates degrees are available through fully accredited online programs.
