Pharmacy Technician Certification in Ohio - OH

An individual who wishes to become a pharmacy technician must have the self-discipline to enter an Ohio pharmacy technician certification program. Though the profession of a pharmacy technician is extremely strict, over 1,300 individuals are employed in the state of Ohio. These numbers are only projected to increase as the pharmaceutical industry continues to expand. 

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in Ohio

Due to the adoption of Emily’s Law, it is now an Ohio state law that an individual must be a registered pharmacy technician in order to be employed as one. The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy has set up specific requirements in order to obtain a valid license to become a pharmacy technician.


  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be of good moral character and behavior habits
  • Must have obtained a degree in pharmaceuticals from a Board approved school of pharmacy or related program
  • Must have adequately completed at least the minimum qualifications of a pharmacy internship
  • Must have successfully passed the licensure examinations required by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy

Internship Requirements:

  • Individual must have adequately completed at least 60 semester hours of an approved pharmacy program and be enrolled in a pharmacy school
    • Individual may also apply for internship if they already possess a pharmacy degree
  • Each person wanting to become a pharmacy intern must submit the application to the State Board of Pharmacy
  • Must pay the application fee of $22.50
  • Must submit official sealed transcripts and documentation certifying the individual is actively working towards becoming a registered pharmacy technician and enrolled in courses at an approved pharmacy school
  • The intern must complete 1,500 hours in an approved and structured practical internship following acceptance of licensure as an intern
    • Credit can only be obtained after successfully passing practical and academic coursework
    • Up to 500 hours can be earned at other sites distributing dangerous drugs, rather than strictly pharmacies, only after a formal request has been approved
    • All internship hours must be documented and deemed valid by an approved supervisor

Applying for Licensure Examinations:

  • Each person desiring to become a registered pharmacy technician must complete and submit the “Application For Examination As A Pharmacist” for Ohio
    • These applications are available on the Board’s website or can be obtained at each of the Ohio Colleges of Pharmacy Offices
  • Must submit application fee of $110 along with criminal background check
  • Individual must apply online with The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) at www.nabp.net and pay the required fees to register for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE)
  • If the Board decides applicant is qualified to sit for the licensure exams, the individual will receive an “Authorization To Test” (ATT) via mail and be certified to sit for the exams
    • NAPLEX costs $465
    • MPJE costs $185
    • Both $650

Registration Application Requirements:

  • Must have successfully passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination
    • To successfully pass both of these examinations, a passing score is comprised of a 75 or higher for each exam
    • In the event that an individual fails to pass the exams, they must re-submit application forms and pay the required fees again
      • Must wait a minimum of 90 days to retake the NAPLEX
      • Must wait a minimum of 30 days to retake the MPJE
  • Must have submitted a request for a criminal background check and electronic fingerprint impressions
    • Individual must request criminal history check from the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI & I) of Ohio and pay processing fee of $22
    • Records must also include a request from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and pay processing fee of $24
  • Applicant must submit completed application for registration and registration fee of $110 (check or money order payable to Treasurer, State of Ohio)
