Become a CNA in Oklahoma

Steps to become a CNA in Oklahoma

Compared to most careers in the health care industry, certified nurse aides can go from training to actual employment very quickly.  However, it takes a special type of person, with particular qualities, to be a nurse aide.  The Oklahoma State Department of Health has very specific definitions of the roles nurse aides play in health care.  During their work, nurse assistants are expected to provide daily care to patients such as bathing, grooming, transportation, etc.

Nurse aides must also provide security and comfort for patients.  Nurse assistants must be mindful of the resident’s health at all times.  Any worsening of health such as a drop in blood pressure, a fall, or a sudden weight loss must be reported immediately to an administrator.  Nurse aides are also required to answer all calls for help from patients.  Certified nurse assistants must pass a criminal background check, a physical examination, and complete 75 hours of training along with an examination before being placed in the state’s registry.

In Oklahoma, in order to maintain CNA certification, nurse aides must complete two hours of training each month specific to their particular work.  They must also be employed at least one 8-hour shift every two years.  If a valid complaint of abuse from a patient or family member of a patient is found against the aide, he/she will lose his/her certification in all 50 states.  Nurse aides must undergo at least one performance review every year.
