How to Become a Gerontologist in Oklahoma - OK

The Census Bureau reports that 13.5% of Oklahoma’s population is over the age of 65, higher than the national average. Accordingly, career options in the area of gerontology continue to expand in Oklahoma and across the nation, providing opportunities to work with the growing population of aging adults. While gerontology certification in Oklahoma is not necessary in order to work with the elderly, most positions in gerontology do require a degree of some sort.

Some of the careers available for graduates with undergraduate or graduate degrees and a specialization in gerontology include administrators or staff members in some of the following settings: senior centers, intergenerational or adult day care programs, senior volunteer and employment programs, health care and home health agencies, long-term health facilities, nutrition programs, leisure and travel agencies, and retirement communities. There are also opportunities in academic, research, and educational institutions. Another possibility for those interested in gerontology studies is to become a geriatrician, or a medical doctor who specializes in treating the elderly.

Careers for those with gerontology concentrations can be found throughout Oklahoma in cities including Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Norman. Medical positions working with senior citizens are available in long term care facilities and in hospitals including Saint Francis Hospital, Oklahoma State University Medical Center, Saint Anthony Hospital and the many INTEGRIS Health Centers across the state of Oklahoma.
