All physical therapists are required to have successfully completed an undergraduate program in a related curriculum and a post-graduate degree program in physical therapy in order to apply for a license in the state of Oklahoma. These programs must be accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association and approved by the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (OBMLS). Degree programs include Master’s degrees, and the more recent Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, which is being offered by more and more accredited colleges and universities. There are a variety of online Oklahoma physical therapy schools, which have advantages such as flexibility and convenience.
Oklahoma also requires continuing education in the field of physical therapy for license renewal. Physical therapists must complete 40 credit hours of continuing education coursework during each two-year licensure period. All coursework must be approved by the OBMLS.
Half of the requirement (20 hours) must be in what is referred to as “synchronous education,” which requires real-time interaction between the student and the instructor, and three of these hours must relate to ethics education and include ethics material as published by the American Physical Therapy Association. The licensee cannot carry over any credits into the next licensure period. Reduction in the number of continuing education requirements may be cut in half for those licensees who obtain their licenses during the second year of a license compliance period. Licensees who fail to comply with the above continuing education requirements may be placed on probation, or have their licenses suspended or revoked.
