How to Become a Physical Therapist Assistant in Ontario – ON

Physical therapy assistant training in Ontario is vital to procuring a position as a physiotherapist assistant in the province. Most physical therapist assistant training programs last from one to two years, resulting in a diploma, certificate or degree. The typical physiotherapist assistant training program has admission prerequisites. If one wants to know how to become a physiotherapist assistant, these prerequisites must be fulfilled before training can begin. They include an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, Grade 12 English, Grade 11 or 12 Biology, and certain liberal arts and social science courses which may vary from school to school. In addition, one must have current First Aid and CPR certification, a current immunization record, and in some cases, a criminal background check.

Courses for physical therapy assistants include anatomy and physiology, the humanities, English and writing, interpersonal communications, developmental rehabilitation concepts, basics of musculoskeletal movement, psychology, therapeutic skills, and a clinical placement. These courses (other than the clinical placement) may occur in a classroom setting or online through distance learning. The clinical placement usually occurs in a real-life job setting under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. Here, students get the opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have learned in the classroom. It also provides a great chance to network with possible future employers.
